About our concrete contractor crew in Duluth

A fresh concrete driveway with control joints leads to a two-story house and open garage.

How I got into concrete

I taught myself concrete on projects at my own place, then learned the rest working on other crews before I started Duluth Concrete Works in 2021. The biggest thing those years taught me is that the smooth surface you see is the easy part. The base under it and where the water goes are what decide whether a slab holds up.

Plenty of yards in Duluth sit on a slope, and a lot of jobs here mean tying new concrete into old steps or walks, so I get to do the kind of figuring out I like best. Homeowners call us for driveways, patios, walks and steps. Builders and property owners call when a foundation, a wall or a cut needs real thought. Either way, I'd rather ask you one more question before we pour than leave you living with a problem.

What working with us is like

  • The person you meet runs your job

I come out to look at your job and talk it through with you myself, and I'm on site running our crew through the pour. That way the plan we worked out together is the one that gets built.

  • An estimate you can compare line by line

Our estimates list the base work, tearing out the old concrete and cleanup right alongside the concrete itself. If another bid comes in lower, you can set the two side by side and see where the difference is.

  • Straight talk about what's under the slab

Some things we can judge before we dig, and some, like how soft the ground is under an old driveway, we only find out once it's open, so we tell you which is which up front. If the budget gets tight, I'll push to keep the money in the base, because a nice finish on a slab that settles is still a problem.

Licensing, insurance and permits

Serving Duluth and 3 surrounding cities

  • Our license and insurance

Licensed and insured. In Duluth, either the owner or the contractor doing the work is responsible for getting the permit, and a contractor who isn't the owner has to be licensed under Minnesota's contractor licensing rules, so it's fair to ask any bidder about it.

  • Permits and inspections

The city's Construction Services & Inspections office issues building permits, and any work that needs a permit also needs inspections. When your job needs one, we pull it and book the inspections, and if you'd rather apply yourself, I'll tell you what the city will want to see from us.
