Request an estimateWhat does it take to cut concrete in Duluth?
Concrete cutting means sawing straight lines and openings through a slab or wall, or core drilling round holes, so a drain, pipe, conduit or new section of concrete can go where the old concrete is. Duluth Concrete Works does this in Duluth for homeowners, builders and property owners, and I plan each cut with you before a saw comes out.
Usually you're here because something has to go through concrete that's already down, like a new drain line in a garage floor, a cracked driveway panel that has to come out or a basement wall that's getting a window. The price moves with how many feet we cut, how thick the concrete is, how much steel is in it, whether it's a round hole or a straight line and whether we break out and haul the pieces. The schedule mostly turns on whether the job needs a scan or a permit first. The estimate I give you at your site shows what your cut costs and says plainly whether removal is included.
How we do concrete cutting, start to finish
Before we cut, I want to know what the cut is for, how thick the concrete is, what's around it and what might be hiding inside, like a pipe, a wire or rebar, the steel bars that hold a slab together. Then we match the saw to the job, because the wrong one makes a rough cut or can't reach the spot. A flat saw rides across a slab, a wall saw runs on a track along a wall, a hand saw gets into tight corners and a wire saw goes through thick or heavily reinforced sections, while round holes for pipes get core drilled. We mark the lines with you, make the cut, clean up and, if the quote includes it, break out the pieces and haul them off. When a trench goes back together, we pack the fill under the patch in layers, because a patch laid over loose dirt settles and cracks, and that hidden part matters more to me than how smooth the top looks on day one.
Cutting is often the first half of a bigger job. When a cracked or sunken section comes out of a driveway, the new pour is part of our concrete driveway building work, and when a patio gets cut back or opened up for a door or a drain, we pour the new piece through our concrete patio construction work. On new slabs we pour, we also saw control joints, shallow cuts that give the concrete a planned place to crack, and we cut them early so cracks land in our lines and not across the middle.
Concrete cutting in Duluth, the permits and the jobs we see
The city of Duluth requires a building permit for foundation, wall and other structural work, so a cut into a foundation or a structural wall goes through the city before the saw does. If the cut is for a new bedroom window, the city also wants a building permit, a new smoke or CO alarm and an egress window, one big enough to get out through in an emergency, and the permit application has to include the window supplier's papers showing the window meets egress and energy code. The city's list doesn't name cutting by itself, so for a cut that isn't structural, the city's permit office is the place to ask, and we check before we start. When a job needs a permit, we pull it and book the inspections, and if you'd rather apply yourself, I'll tell you what the city will want to see from us.
We're based in Duluth and work in Superior, Hermantown, Cloquet and the cities around them. A lot of what we cut is older basements getting new drain lines or windows, garage floors being trenched and driveway panels coming out ahead of a new pour, and we see the same kinds of jobs in Hermantown and Cloquet.
Why call us for concrete cutting
I meet you at the job
I come out to look at the job and meet with you myself, and I'm on site running it while our crew does the cutting. The person who heard what you need is the one watching where the blade goes.
In business since 2021
I started this business in 2021 after teaching myself concrete at my own place and learning the rest on other crews. The jobs I like best are the ones that need some figuring out, and a cut through a floor or wall usually does.
Licensed, insured, rule explained
We're licensed and insured. In Minnesota, a contractor hired directly by the owner of a one- to four-unit home for more than one special skill needs a residential building contractor or remodeler license, and a contractor offering only one special skill needs no state license unless they do residential roofing.

Frequently asked questions
How much does concrete cutting cost in Duluth?
Concrete slab saw cutting across the US usually costs about $4 to $15 per linear foot, and that covers the sawing, not breaking out or hauling the pieces. Thicker or reinforced concrete costs more per foot than shallow, easy-to-reach slabs, a small wall-sawing job can be set more by a minimum or setup charge than by the per-foot rate, and round holes are priced per hole. I'll give you the figure for your own cut at the estimate.
Does the price of concrete cutting include hauling the concrete away?
Not always, because sawing and removing concrete are separate jobs, and some cutters cut the lines and leave the panels where they are. Breaking, hauling and disposal can add more than the sawing itself, so our quote says plainly whether we break out and haul the pieces.
Will cutting concrete fill my house with dust?
Usually not, because most slab, wall and wire sawing runs wet, and water on the blade cuts the dust down a lot. The catch is slurry, a gray mud of water and cuttings that has to be vacuumed up or contained, so indoors or near a storm drain we plan where it goes before we start. Smaller hand saws sometimes cut dry where water isn't practical, and then the blade and a vacuum handle the dust.
Do I need a permit to cut a new driveway opening at the street in Duluth?
Yes, in Duluth a driveway opening in the public right-of-way needs an approved application and an excavation permit, secured by a bond and insurance, and owners apply through the city's ePlace system. Anyone digging also has to contact Gopher State One Call by law so underground utilities get located first, so ask whether your job includes that call.
How do I find out if there's rebar or a pipe in my slab before it's cut?
For a cut into structural concrete, a scan may be needed first to locate rebar, conduit, pipes and other hidden hazards inside it. Ask whether a scan is part of the plan, and I'll tell you at the estimate whether your cut calls for one and why.
What should I tell a contractor when asking for a concrete cutting quote?
Tell us what surface needs cutting, where it is, how thick the concrete is if you know and what the cut is for. Those details point to the right saw, so I can show up already thinking about how to do your job.
Work that often follows a cut
Concrete driveway building
When a cracked or sinking panel comes out, we pour the new section over a packed base so it sits level with the old and sheds water.
Concrete patio construction
Cutting a patio back for a door or a new shape? We pour the new piece so it meets the house with water running away from it.
